NAIOP Sustainable Development Award Honors The JBG Companies for National Cancer Institute Campus

The JBG Companies of Chevy Chase, Maryland, was named the recipient of NAIOP’s annual Sustainable Development Award, which was presented during a special ceremony at Development ‘14: The Meeting for Commercial Real Estate.
JBG was honored for its development of a new office and research facility for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) campus in Rockville, Maryland. The 575,000-square-foot workplace emphasizes employee well-being and productivity and features greenery-filled interiors, planted wall panels, natural landscapes, fitness trails and free shuttle service to nearby transit.
JBG used an integrated approach at the project to incorporate key sustainability principles such as balance of life-cycle costs, environmental impact, and occupant health, safety, security and productivity. It also used building information modeling (BIM) to allow critical base building and tenant systems to be accurately coordinated in advance, minimizing field modifications and generating significant cost savings. The campus utilizes the latest energy monitoring, demand-side management techniques and active utility rebates benchmarking. It has been certified LEED Gold and has achieved an Energy Star Portfolio Manager score of 97.
Accepting the award, JBG Principal Greg Trimmer stated: “At JBG, we focus on the development of properties and the creation of neighborhoods in urban infill and suburban retrofit locations that are transit oriented and, as a result, inherently sustainable. The results are neighborhoods that are walkable, livable and healthy. To us, that’s good business and, frankly, it’s what the consumer demands.”
“We are extremely proud of the project for the National Cancer Institute,” he said. “It’s what we consider a model of sustainability with its LEED certification, energy efficiencies and economic success. Most importantly, we hope that the sustainability of the project will have a positive impact on the researchers who are trying to cure disease.”

2014 Marks 10th Annual Award for NAIOP
NAIOP established the Sustainable Development Award in 2005 to recognize the growing number of firms engaged in environmentally responsible development. NAIOP and its member companies are committed to developing model properties adhering to the highest standards in the industry and believe that socially conscious development is essential to the economic vitality of the industry.
Entries for the award are reviewed by industry leaders. Applicants are judged on a number of criteria, including innovation and the economic success of the property.
