Advanced RTU Campaign Promotes Efficiency in Rooftop Air Conditioning

Older, inefficient commercial rooftop unit air-conditioning systems are common and can significantly increase a building’s energy costs. Fortunately, these systems can be replaced or retrofitted with new units that can save money and energy, make buildings more comfortable, and help the environment.
Replacing or retrofitting older rooftop unit (RTU) air-conditioning systems can save building owners and operators up to 50 percent on energy costs, with payback in as little as two years. The Advanced RTU Campaign (ARC) — a collaboration between ASHRAE, the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Better Buildings Alliance, and other supporting stakeholders — aims to help overcome real and perceived barriers to widespread adoption of efficient commercial RTU solutions. NAIOP is proud to be a supporting organization in this campaign.
ARC encourages commercial building owners and operators to evaluate their stock of RTUs, replace older units with high-efficiency ones, and retrofit other RTUs with advanced controls. The campaign provides building owners, operators, contractors, and vendors with access to information and expertise that will enable them to lower facility operating costs while maintaining or improving building occupant comfort.
For building owners, joining the campaign means making a pledge to evaluate opportunities for savings and allows them to:
- Leverage ARC Campaign resources and technical expertise in evaluating these savings opportunities;
- Stay informed about innovative RTU technologies and resources produced through the campaign; and
- Gain recognition, earn achievement awards, and participate in case studies (after submitting documentation of implementing a replacement or retrofit).
Other organizations that promote high-efficiency RTU technology and best practices — including utilities, manufacturers, contractors, vendors, and so forth — also may join the campaign as supporters. Supporters can promote ARC resources, and the campaign will provide links to their resources to help recruit building owners and managers to join the campaign.
