Senate Crunch-time on Reconciliation Bill

June 17, 2025 | Washington, D.C.

Senate Republican leadership and Senate Finance Committee Chair Mike Crapo (R-ID) are rushing to beat the clock and get the tax and spending reconciliation measure passed by their chamber before the Senate’s scheduled July 4 recess. With the Senate in session only through Wednesday of this week because of the Juneteenth holiday, and the July 4 recess effectively scheduled to begin June 27, time is running short to meet the Senate’s self-imposed deadline to pass its tax and spending measure.

Last week, Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) threatened to cancel the Senate's planned July 4 recess to keep pressure on Republican senators to resolve differences holding up the legislation. Crapo had planned to release the remaining text of the Senate’s version of the so-named “One Big Beautiful Bill” last Friday, but major disagreements over the fate of the state and local tax deduction (SALT) and Medicaid reforms undercut those plans. Crapo was expected to brief his Republican colleagues Monday evening of this week before releasing the text.
