Congress Returns to Kick Off Reconciliation Push

April 29, 2025 | Washington, D.C.

The U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate return this week from a district work period, with several committees in the House marking up their portion of tax reconciliation legislation. President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson were scheduled to meet at the White House on Monday to discuss the next steps for Trump’s so called “big, beautiful bill” that is expected to contain a large part of his domestic agenda.

Five House committees are expected to hold their legislative markups this week – a big news week with Trump holding events celebrating his first 100 days in office and Canada’s national election, where Trump’s tariff policies have become a top issue. The draft language from the various committees, delineating where controversial reductions in government spending necessary to achieve deficit reduction goals will occur, will be included in a tax portion developed by the House Ways and Means Committee mid-May. Johnson has stated he wants the House to pass a reconciliation bill by the Memorial Day recess.
