Spending Package Expected to Pass Before Shutdown Deadline

March 05, 2024 | Washington, D.C.

On Sunday, Republican and Democratic House and Senate leaders unveiled a package of six appropriations bills totaling $467.5 billion, aiming for passage on Wednesday to avoid a Friday shutdown of the agencies funded by the legislation. The package includes 2024 appropriations for several agencies whose funding was set to expire on March 8, including the U.S. Departments of Agriculture; Veterans Affairs; Transportation; and Housing and Urban Development. House and Senate negotiators have begun working on a funding package for remaining federal government agencies, for which the funding deadline is March 22.

The House plans to pass the funding agreement on Wednesday and then send it to the Senate for action before President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address on Thursday evening. Biden is expected to unveil spending and policy priorities that will become a major part of his presidential campaign for November.
