Friday Government Shutdown Looms

February 27, 2024 | Washington, D.C.

Congress is back in session and facing a potential partial government funding shutdown at the end of this week as talks broke down over the weekend between Republican and Democratic House and Senate leadership. President Joe Biden was scheduled to meet with Senate and House leaders in hopes of averting a shutdown.

Funding for agencies provided by four of 12 appropriations bills expires this Friday, March 1, unless Congress passes, and Biden signs, the relevant appropriations bills. Government operations funded by the remaining eight 2024 fiscal year appropriations bills expire a week later, on March 8. A temporary stopgap measure known as a continuing resolution extending funding until March 22 is being considered, although Republican House leaders have repeatedly said they would not pass a continuing resolution.
