NAIOP: ESG Goals Increasingly Driving Brownfield Redevelopment

As the availability of readily developable land decreases, brownfields – former industrial sites and other properties that may be contaminated – are attracting more attention from developers in the U.S. and Canada. These sites, typically located in urban areas with well-developed transportation infrastructure, are potentially attractive targets for redevelopment to new uses, but often require regulatory support or public subsidies to overcome the additional costs and risks associated with environmental remediation.

A report released by the NAIOP Research Foundation found that the commercial real estate industry in Canada generated $278.4 billion in economic activity in 2021 and projected that the underpinning Canadian economy will remain strong through 2022.
