Powell says he excited to serve as chairman and is looking forward to meeting with NAIOP members face-to-face in 2016, sharing his views on “Surfing the Economic Waves” and updating members on NAIOP news and events.

A 30+ year commercial real estate veteran, Powell developed industrial and office projects with some of the leading firms in California before transitioning to the institutional investment world. Today he leads the acquisitions team in the western United States for Bentall Kennedy U.S., a Sun Life Investment Management company that is one of the top 20 largest real estate investment managers in the world. In this role he has acquired investments totaling $1.34 billion including multiple development projects. Previously, he was a managing director at Deutsche Asset & Wealth Management (formerly RREEF) for 14+ years where he put together transactions amounting to over 15 million square feet of space. He has created joint ventures with Trammell Crow, Lincoln Property Company, Kennedy Wilson, Fairfield Residential, Sares-Regis and numerous other developers.

Powell is an 18-year member of NAIOP. He was the president of the San Francisco Bay Area chapter in 2006, winning the mid-sized chapter of the year, and he remains a member of the Advisory Committee in his chapter. He has been a member of the Corporate Board of Directors and the Executive Committee since 2009, where he has led multiple initiatives including chairing, in successive order, the Business Development Committee, National Forums Committee and the Education Committee.
