Building and Design

Building Design and Construction – Provides news from the commercial building industry, listings of the industry's top 300 firms, an archive of BD&C articles and information on products and suppliers.

Buildings Online – Provides information on the latest trends and products in the commercial/institutional buildings market.

Design Cost Data – Case studies, cost guides and trends under multiple asset categories. Developers use DCD as a working tool to provide the data for historical cost estimates on future projects. Free and paid subscriptions.

Energy Information Administration – Information on the stock of U.S. commercial buildings, their energy-related building characteristics, and their energy consumption and expenditures.

McGraw-Hill Construction – Features industry news taken from Dodge, Sweets, Engineering News-Record and 10 regional publications.

Reed Construction DataProvides architects and contractors with in-depth information on commercial building products - including technical data, sourcing, cost data, project use examples, and downloadable specs, CAD and BIM objects.

TheSquareFoot - A free commercial real estate platform for business owners to connect with the full complement of providers they need for finding and setting up a new office, restaurant, warehouse, or retail store. TheSquareFoot also provides landlords with a full suite of services to help them manage and market their portfolios.

Canadian Resources

Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC)  News, resources, reports on building performance, financing, educational programs.

Natural Resources Canada Information on retrofit incentives, energy efficient practices and technologies. Reference library, calculators, publications and case studies also provided.

Office of Energy Efficiency  Canada's "one-stop service" for information on energy efficiency, with links to statistics, news and other useful information for business and consumers.

Real Estate Institute of Canada (REIC)   Industry links, member articles and publications, events.


ChainLinks Retail Advisors ChainLinks is a retail real estate advisory services organization in North America serving retailers, landlords and investors. It is comprised of privately owned companies in 60+ cities with more than 800 retail brokers.

International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) Global trade association of the shopping center industry with 60,000 members in the U.S., Canada and more than 80 other countries. Retail industry news, research, events, publications and monthly magazine, Shopping Centers Today.

Marcus & Millichap – The 2011 National Retail Report ranks 44 major U.S. retail markets based on a series of 12-month forward-looking supply and demand indicators. The report also discusses construction activity, rents, vacancy rates and investment trends at the metro level. Click on "Research Services" and register to download the report.

Plain Vanilla Shell – Retail and development news, research center which includes a free Retail Tenant Directory database of over 5,200 retail companies. Search by square footage, areas of operation or planned expansion, preferred locations (enclosed mall, strip center, etc.) and by any of over 70 retail categories. Basic access is free and detailed information requires a paid subscription to one or more services.

Retail Merchandiser  – Daily industry and retailer news, features and real estate reports.

Retail Traffic – A monthly magazine on retail real estate trends, analysis, market profiles, industry news, rankings, daily blogs and other special supplements. Also independent research on a variety of topics that pertain to the retail real estate industry.

Springwise – The latest trends in retail.

Smart Growth

American Planning Association – Features local planning information and policies.

Brookings Institution – A wealth of articles, papers, books and opinion pieces by the highly respected think tank on a diverse range of topics including business, economic, public policy, urban planning.

Data.Gov – Find data, tools, and resources to conduct research, develop web and mobile applications, design data visualizations and more.

IEDC Economic Development and Smart Growth – A report by the International Economic Development Council of eight case studies on the connections between smart growth strategies and economic development. Case studies ranging from the use of transit-oriented development in Portland, OR and Silver Spring, MD to commercial corridor revitalization in Pittsburgh, PA and Burlington, IA are examined. Targeted area redevelopment and the creation of arts and entertainment districts are also studied.

Sustainable Design and Development

American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE)Energy-efficient commercial equipment guide, building performance programs, evaluation tools, case studies and information on emerging technologies.

BuildCarbonNeutral Construction carbon calculator tool for developers and architects to estimate the embodied energy and subsequent carbon amounts released during construction.

Building Environmental Science & Technology Features an information center for designers, builders and developers, an online reference guide and case studies of environmental design projects.

Commercial Real Estate Energy Alliance (CREEA)  An informal, industry-led association of commercial property owners and operators coordinated by the Department of Energy (DOE) as part of the Net-Zero Energy Commercial Building Initiative (CBI). CREEA works with DOE and DOE's national laboratories to advance efficient building technologies, promote the construction of high-performance buildings, and reduce the energy consumption and carbon footprint of the commercial real estate.

Construction Materials Recycling Association (CMRA)  Listing by state for concrete, drywall and asphalt shingle recycling as well as materials sites.

Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency The DSIRE Web site provides a fast and convenient method for accessing information about renewable energy and energy efficiency incentives and regulatory policies administered by federal and state agencies, utilities and local organizations. Summary maps provide a geographical perspective of the availability of each renewable energy incentive type across the U.S. Summary tables provide an overview of renewable energy and energy efficiency incentives offered in each state. Also provided is a library of renewable energy policy reports, papers and presentations and links to other renewable energy resources on the Internet.

Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EREN)Current news about renewable energy, including its place in building development and maintenance and power technology. Specialized resources include a forum for communicating with energy experts, financing options and national and local resources.

Rocky Mountain Institute  RMI's strategic focus, executed through specific initiatives designed to take our work rapidly to scale, is to map and drive the transition from coal and oil to efficiency and renewables.

Sustainable Facilities Tool – Walk through the planning, evaluation and implementation of sustainable projects with this tool from the General Services Administration. Information on case studies, a Q&A forum, procurement, installation and maintenance guides on green materials and systems is also provided.
