John L. West, CEO, Cottonwood Partners

2016 NAIOP Utah Developer of the Year

Mr. West has been responsible for over $2 billion of real estate transactions in his career dealing with all types of properties in most major U.S. markets.

As a co-Founder and Managing Partner of Cottonwood Partners since 1996, and CEO since 2005, Mr. West has been directly responsible for the acquisition and/or development of over 6,000,000 square feet of office/medical space in Utah, Texas, California, Washington DC, Florida and Colorado. Cottonwood Partners has been an advisor to the Utah State Retirement Systems since 1995 and Mr. West has been the senior member of this advisory team since its inception. He was the driving force, working hands on in the planning and development of the Cottonwood Corporate Center, a stunning 1,000,000 square foot office park at the base of Big Cottonwood Canyon, and The Forge, a planned community in Vineyard, Utah, the center of Utah County, designed for over 1,800,000 square feet of commercial and residential space.

With a strong belief in giving back to the community, Mr. West has been a long-time supporter of The Fisher Center for Real Estate at the University of California at Berkeley, and several more local charities supporting those with special needs in their lives.

He serves on the boards of The Fisher Center, Datashield, a state of the art cyber security company, and The National History Museum of Utah. He is a past board member of The Central Utah Water Conservancy District (appointed by Governor Leavitt to be Finance Chairman of this, the largest water conservancy district in the western US), Envision Utah, and was the Chairman of Governor Leavitt’s Silicon Slopes initiative for real estate development in Utah.

When he is not influencing and sculpting Salt Lake’s landscape, Mr. West enjoys his family, and anything involving the game of golf and/or the mountains. He is a graduate of BYU with a degree in physics and holds an MBA from the Wharton School.
