The Dollars and Sense of Green Retrofits

What motivates organizations to undergo a green retrofit and what is the price premium for doing so? In this Deloitte/Charles Lockwood survey of LEED-certified project owners, corporate environmental commitment ranked the highest motivation for a green retrofit. Find out more about the drivers for taking on these projects and the costs associated with them in this report.

Green Building Ordinance in Effect for San Francisco Buildings

Mayor Newsom signs a new ordinance requiring new commercial buildings over 5,000 square feet and renovations on buildings over 25,000 square feet to be subject to LEED certification. Benefits of the ordinance include the reduction of carbon emissions by 60,000 tons, construction and demolition waste by 700 million pounds and a savings of 200,000 megawatt hours of power.

A Roofing Calculator

How do sustainable roofs compare to traditional roofs in cost and benefit? The GreenSave Calculator, developed by Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC) and the Athena Institute with funding by Tremco, lets you compare roofing alternatives over a specific time period to determine which has the lowest life-cycle cost. You can also uncover which roofs have lower initial costs but cost more over time. To use this free tool, create a login and then go to the GreenSave Calculator link.

DOE Pursues Zero-Net Energy Initiative for Commercial Buildings

August 5, 2008 -- The U.S. Department of Energy announced the launch of their Zero-Net Energy program with establishment of the National Laboratory Collaborative on Building Technologies. Both focus on DOE's ongoing efforts to develop buildings that use cutting-edge efficiency technologies and on-site renewable energy (such as solar power and geothermal) generation to offset their energy use from the electricity grid by 2025.

NAIOP Energy Policy

Are you familiar with NAIOP's recently released energy policy statement? The policy follows NAIOP's Policy on Sustainable Development, which was announced in September 2007.
