Energy Efficiency in Buildings: Business Realities and Opportunities

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is pushing for zero net energy construction worldwide through its Energy Efficiency in Buildings (EEB) project. The three-year initiative will assess the environmental impacts of buildings and develop means to achieve zero net energy use for residential and commercial buildings. The six countries covered by the project are the United States, Brazil, China, Europe, India and Japan. The WBCSD is a global association of 200 companies that serves as business advocate for sustainable development through economic growth, environmental balance and social progress. Its members are drawn from more than 35 countries and 20 major industrial sectors.

Green Downtown Office Markets: A Future Reality

A whitepaper by CB Richard Ellis reports that major barriers to green building are keeping some developers from meeting demand. The report also discusses research from McGraw-Hill Construction Research & Analytics on costs and obstacles to green building. Information on the U.S. Green Building Council LEED Rating System as well as green building codes and incentives are also discussed.

Six Degrees of Energy Efficient Buildings

An excerpt from "Energy Efficiency -- The Future is Now," by Kevin Klustner, describes six primary focus areas that will help create the world's most energy-efficient buildings. The focus points include daylighting with natural light; tight construction; indoor air quality; planning and landscaping; placing a high percentage of windows facing south; and making rooftops efficient.

Green Guide for Health Care

Want to know more about best practices for building the next generation of high performance medical office buildings? This green building guide is the health care sector's first quantifiable sustainable design self-certifying toolkit integrating environmental and health principles into the planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance of healing environment facilities. It applies to new freestanding structures, additions to existing buildings and adaptive reuse projects. Non-health care facilities can take advantage of the guide's emphasis on health-based considerations such as daylighting and energy efficient technologies. Construction Carbon Calculator

How do you approximate the net embodied carbon of a project's structures and site? The Construction Carbon Calculator tool helps developers, architects and land planners estimate the energy and subsequent carbon amounts released during construction. Find out more about what makes this simple calculator different, how it works and why it matters.

NAIOP Sustainable Development Policy

Are you familiar with NAIOP's official policy endorsing sustainable practices for commercial real estate? The policy is the result of a Green Task Force established in March 2007 comprised of 13 NAIOP members from across the country and varying professions that contribute to the development industry.

Green Comes to development '07

How do you "green" industrial properties? What is the return on investment from going green? Do tenants value a green building? NAIOP's development '07: the annual meeting for commercial real estate will feature an informative discussion of these topics and more during an Industrial Green Panel session. Additional sessions include a comprehensive overview by Jonathan Fenton-Jones, commercial director of Gazeley, on the company's sustainable development practices and eco-initiatives. Other not-to-be missed highlights of the conference are a case study in synergy and sustainable design and two project tours.

Green Roundtables at development '07

Facilitated by industry experts, roundtables will last approximately 45 minutes each. Come participate in these conference roundtables, "Guidelines for Developing Green Industrial" and "LEED Certification: Why and How to Become a LEED Accredited Professional."
