"Greening of Corporate America" SmartMarket Report

Sustainability policies and construction practices are everywhere but what is the competitive advantage for the real estate industry? The profitability of America's corporations will be closely tied to proactive sustainability practices and green building principles, according to findings from this landmark study commissioned by Siemens Building Technologies, Inc. and Siemens USA. The study found that 63 percent of CEOs recognize the financial benefits of green building while 57 percent think green fosters innovation within their companies.

Massachusetts Developers Face New Rules

Greenhouse gases as part of developers' environmental impact reviews? New reforms in Massachusetts aimed at private developers will now require them to estimate the greenhouse gases their large-scale projects will produce and seek to limit them. This article discusses this new plan governing large residential and commercial construction and covering all six greenhouse gases recognized under the Kyoto Protocal. You will need to type "Massachusetts Developers" in the article search box on the bottom right to access the article.

"Innovation in Design" points are now available by using the Cradle to CradleSM program for certified building products on a number of criteria such as energy and water efficiency and materials reuse. The points are awarded to LEED projects that develop new solutions, employ new technologies, educate or realize exemplary performance in another area.

U.S. Green Building Council Proposes "Optimize Energy" Points

The USGBC Board of Directors and LEED Steering Committee wants to increase the impact in reducing building energy related greenhouse gas emissions by proposing additional requirements on the LEED Green Building Rating System. Industrial Developers Invited to Sustainable Design Study for Warehouse and Distribution Centers Webinar
June 5, 2007; 1 P.M. (EDT); noon (CDT); 10 A.M. (PDT)

Presented by: Ed Klimek, Partner, KSS Architects
Do you want to
participate in a discussion of how LEED credits can be applied to warehouse and distribution centers? We are looking for industrial developer input on a research report drafted by KSS Architects. The report outlines proposed LEED Core and Shell modifications and new innovation credits for industrial buildings. The document will be presented to the U.S. Green Building Council for full adoption into the LEED-CS criteria once finalized. The proposed LEED-CS modifications include changes within the six main LEED categories of Sustainable Sites; Water Efficiency; Energy & Atmosphere; Materials & Resources; Indoor Environmental Quality; and Innovation & Design. Proposed Innovation Credits under LEED-CS are within the categories of Proximity to Multimodal Transportation; Site Selection; Truck Idling Reduction; and Cubic Volume.

It is anticipated that developers can use criteria in the report for presentations to end users to demonstrate how these modifications and innovations can form the basis of better standards for industrial buildings.
