Using Pervious Concrete to Achieve LEED Points

Dr. Erin Ashley, Director of Codes and Sustainability, National Ready-Mix Concrete Association, discusses the elements of pervious concrete and specific LEED credits where it can aid the designer such as storm water design, heat island effect, water efficient landscaping, recycled content and regional materials.

Harnessing the Power of Wind

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) report examines the technical feasibility of wind power providing up to 20 percent of U.S. total electricity needs by 2030. Wind contributed to more than 30 percent of the new U.S. generation capacity in 2007, making it the second largest power source, surpassed only by natural gas.

High-Performance Building Resources

The Whole Building Design Guide provides a wide range of resources on sustainable buildings, primarily in the categories of design guidance, project management, and operations and maintenance.

Green Building Standards for Dallas

As of October 1, 2009, new commercial buildings smaller than 50,000 square feet must use 15 percent less energy and 20 percent less water. By October 1, 2011, all new construction must meet basic LEED standards. For the full article, go to www.dallasnews.com and enter "greener building standards" in the Search box on the top left side of the page.

LEED 2009 Open for Public Comment

The next version of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design simplifies the standards while also allowing customization for regional differences. The new 110-point system includes 10 optional bonus points for various green practices. The proposed revision is open for public comment until June 22.

NAIOP Energy Policy

Are you familiar with NAIOP's recently released energy policy statement? The policy follows NAIOP's Policy on Sustainable Development, which was announced in September 2007.

Seeking LEED® Certification? New NAIOP Resource Explains Tax Incentives

If you are seeking LEED® certification, the Ready, Set, Save! Overview of LEED® Tax Incentives Webinar CD will help you identify realistic strategies which will qualify your building for the substantial incentives offered in your area. During this strategy session, Mark Wilhelm, Green Ideas Environmental Building Consultants, shared his experience in being the first to successfully navigate through the incentives program. This presentation helps you answer common questions such as: What are the different levels of incentives available? How to register your project for incentives (abatements)? What are the building requirements? What types of documentation will need to be gathered during the process? This CD contains the audio and PowerPoint presentation from the May 2008 Webinar.

To order the Ready, Set, Save! Overview of LEED® Tax Incentives Webinar CD , or to see all of NAIOP's resources on green development, visit the NAIOP bookstore. Questions? Contact NAIOP's Publications Department at (800) 445-0443 or naiop@brightkey.net.
