The Dollars and Sense of Green Retrofits

What motivates organizations to undergo a green retrofit and what is the price premium for doing so? In this Deloitte/Charles Lockwood survey of LEED-certified project owners, corporate environmental commitment ranked the highest motive for a green retrofit. Find out more about the drivers for taking on these projects and the costs associated with them in this report.

Advanced Energy Design Guides

Developed through the collaboration of ASHRAE, AIA, IESNA and the USGBC with support from the Department of Energy, guides are now available to assist building owners in achieving a 30 percent energy savings compared to buildings that meet the minimum requirements of ASHRAE Standard 90.1-1999. Guides available for free download include those for warehouses under 50,000 square feet and office buildings under 20,000 square feet.

Harnessing the Power of Wind

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) report examines the technical feasibility of wind power providing up to 20 percent of U.S. total electricity needs by 2030. Wind contributed to more than 30 percent of the new U.S. generation capacity in 2007, making it the second largest power source, surpassed only by natural gas.

Green Globes CIEB Module Gains Momentum

The Green Building Initiative's Continual Improvement of Existing Building (CIEB) module is being used by some of the largest corporations and real estate companies. The online tool can be used to verify that design objectives have been met once new buildings are fully operational or as an ongoing green management tool for existing buildings. Real estate companies using the tool include USAA Real Estate Company and Tishman Speyer-Chicago.

LEED 2009 Public Comment Period Closed

The 30-day online public comment period ended June 22 with the next version of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED 2009) scheduled to debut in January. LEED 2009 will reorganize the rating systems by consolidating, aligning and updating them into one system. The new 110-point system includes 10 optional bonus points for various green practices.

NAIOP Energy Policy

Are you familiar with NAIOP's recently released energy policy statement? The policy follows NAIOP's Policy on Sustainable Development, which was announced in September 2007.

Green Building Certification Systems: To Certify or Not to Certify?

One of the first challenges developers face when deciding whether or not to develop a green building is the cost of documentation and certification. Does it make sense to develop a green building and not pursue certification or is the only way to truly develop a green building through certification? Join this panel of developers and green development consultants for Green Building Certification Systems: To Certify or Not to Certify? as they discuss green building certification versus developing a green building without pursuing certification. The panelists discuss the benefits and costs of green building certification and why it makes strategic and economic sense to use certification systems for buildings in some instances and why it is better to pursue non-certification on buildings in other instances.
