The Economies of Green Building

According to a report by Dutch economist Nils Kok, U.S. buildings labeled under the LEED or Energy Star programs charge three percent higher rent, have greater occupancy rates, and sell for 13 percent more than comparable properties. Revisions to LEED System out for Public Comment

Just released for public comment, the latest revision to the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) LEED system covers three new credit categories -- including industrial buildings -- a variety of reworked and new credits and prerequisites.

NAIOP was pleased to participate in the USGBC Working Advisory Group pertaining to the warehouse and distribution center portion of the draft report out for public comment until December 31, 2010. A KSS Architects report funded by the NAIOP Research Foundation examined sustainable design practices particular to distribution centers and offered recommendations organized around the LEED Core and Shell approach.

The free mobile application 123 Zero build by The Weidt Group estimates the discounted payback for constructing a zero emissions office building in any U.S. location. The payback calculations include estimated first costs for a highly energy efficient building, photovoltaic costs, discount rates and user-specified fuel escalation rates. Federal tax incentives are also included in the calculations and local incentives to offset first costs can be added to the computation by the user.
