Building the Green Way

This Harvard Business Review excerpted article by real estate consultant Charles Lockwood discusses several factors that have pushed green to the tipping point. The publication provides 10 rules that companies should follow to construct a new sustainable workplace or turn an existing building green on a standard budget.

New and Updated Incentives from DSIRE

Are you familiar with the latest rebate and grant programs on photovoltaics, energy efficiency and solar? The Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Energy (DSIRE) Web site has just released its January and February 2008 additions and updates. On average, about 60 programs are verified or revised monthly through contact with program administrators or other stakeholders throughout the U.S.

Crunching LEED® Numbers for Commercial Facilities

What is the cost difference between LEED® Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum? How do you quickly analyze LEED costs between different sites and sustainable goals? MHTN Architects answers some frequently asked questions with regard to conceptual estimating for LEED facilities. Thanks NAIOP member Greg Allen!

Industry-Wide Test of Life Cycle Cost Calculator

Construction cost company, RSMeans, and the Continental Automated Building Association (CABA), are seeking feedback on a prototype Life Cycle Cost Calculator. This online tool shows a number of scenarios, but will take live data and generate output only for a 5-10 story office building at this time. The tool allows users to evaluate, model and assess high-performance building automation systems and their impact on life cycle costs of proposed and existing building inventory.

Advanced Energy Design Guides

Through a collaboration of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), free guides are available for PDF download at no charge. The guides are available for three building categories: office buildings up to 20,000 square feet; retail buildings up to 20,000 square feet; and K-12 school buildings.

ProLogis Sustainable Warehouse Construction Initiative

As of January 1, 2008, ProLogis is registering all new development -- currently in the design or planning stage as well as future projects -- with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), to be considered for LEED certification. Find out more about why ProLogis initiated this policy in this press release.

NAIOP Sustainable Development Policy

Are you familiar with NAIOP's official policy endorsing sustainable practices for commercial real estate? The policy is the result of a Green Task Force established in March 2007 comprised of 13 NAIOP members from across the country and varying professions that contribute to the development industry.
