Best Practices on Sustainability

This whitepaper addresses sustainability goals that most industries and manufacturing companies are pursuing, based on a recent survey conducted by architectural and engineering firm, SSOE, Inc. Companies surveyed represent diverse markets including commercial, construction, real estate development, retail, education, government, healthcare, alternative energy and alternative energy. Four sustainability goals were identified as the top four: 1) reducing energy consumption; 2) recycling; 3) achieving sustainable facility design; and 4) using energy-efficient products and equipment.

Why Green Building Has Staying Power

This October 2007 survey by National Real Estate Investor (NREI) reveals that 84 percent of corporate users and 77 percent of developers expect to own, manage or lease at least some sustainable properties five years from now. In addition, developers expect the volume of green properties in their portfolios to increase from nine percent to 20 percent by 2012. Find out more about how corporations and developers are meeting demands for energy efficiency in this comprehensive report.

Avoiding Moisture Problems in Green Buildings

This report* authored by the Liberty Building Forensics Group, a firm of forensic engineers and architects specializing in moisture and mold building forensics, takes a look at the contributions that good building envelope and mechanical design play in constructing sustainable buildings resistant to moisture problems. The report also identifies specific LEED credits that increase the potential for moisture intrusion problems during the design phase. *First in a series of mini-monographs by NCARB.

U.S. Green Building Council Launches New LEED Credentialing Program

In January 2008, the USGBC will transfer responsibility for the LEED Professional Accreditation program to the newly established Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). While the GBCI will serve as the independent administrator of the accreditation program, the USGBC will continue to manage the LEED Green Building Rating System.

GE Real Estate's Green Initiatives

In addition to partnering with the Clinton Climate Initiative, GE Real Estate announced a new program that will incorporate sustainability into its existing origination of investments, underwriting, due diligence and asset management. The initiative's goal is to improve the environmental performance and value of assets while contributing to tenant health.

Local Government Incentives for Sustainable Development

This study by Yudelson Associates uncovered the scope of green building incentives being offered across state and local governments in the U.S. as of August 2007 and assesses what optimal mix of economic and procedural incentives may further green building goals in other municipalities, while assisting developers who want to "build green." The report also contains an Appendix of local government programs, policies and incentives by state and city.

The policy is the result of a Green Task Force established in March 2007 comprised of 13 NAIOP members from across the country and varying professions that contribute to the development industry.
