Green Building Market Barometer

Despite the credit crisis, owners and investors still favor green. According to Turner Construction Company's 2008 survey of real estate executives, 84 percent of respondents said green buildings enjoy lower energy costs than non-green buildings. Survey results also reveal that green creates higher building values (72 percent) and higher asking rents (65 percent). The survey focused on benefits, operating and construction costs, obstacles and LEED certification. A free download of the report is available online.

Green Building Code Committee Resuscitated

ASHRAE committee resumes work on designing the first national building code standard on high-performance buildings, referred to as Standard 189.1. The new committee has approved a work plan that could produce a third public review of the proposed standard by the end of February. The standard had gone through two public comment periods since 2006 but had fallen behind schedule.

DOE Approves Standard 90.1-2004

States are now required by the Department of Energy to certify that their building codes meet the 2004 energy efficiency standard. Increased stringency of building envelopes and complete replacement of interior lighting power density allowances are just a few of the new standards. The 90.1-2004 standard is estimated to save between 12 and 14 percent more energy than the 1999 standard.
