Here’s an Innovative Employee Benefit: Bike-Share Membership

There is a strong case to be made for adding bike-sharing membership as an employee benefit, particularly at tech firms, according to Eric Jaffe, writing in the June 13, 2013 edition of The Atlantic Cities. Jaffe cites the experience of a New York City tech firm named Percolate, a small marketing company that helps businesses to create content pegged to social media. When a bike-sharing service, called Citi Bike, was launched in New York City earlier this year, the firm purchased memberships for all 47 people on staff so that they could commute to work or to appointments on bicycle. The new employee benefit was a hit with staff members.

According to Jaffe, Percolate might not have been the first company to sign up its staff, but it was among an early wave of companies to do so. He said that in May 2013 alone, more than 30 companies came onboard with memberships for their people in Citi Bike. This type of program, wrote Jaffe, is not exclusive to New York City. There is a Capital Bikeshare in Washington, D.C.; the B-cycle in Kansas City, Kansas and Denver, Colorado; and a Hubway bikeshare program in Boston, Massachusetts. Jaffe noted that the more bicyclists that a city has, the safer it is for the overall bicycling public, according to research.
