Construction Management for Owners

Construction Management (CM) for Owners and Developers is an introductory course designed exclusively for the real estate professional with little or no prior CM knowledge. The course provides a practical understanding of the planning, design and construction processes from project initiation to closeout. The emphasis is placed on best practices and applied processes within the limitations of budgets, schedules and available resources in an environment of both known and unknown risks. Fundamentals of the construction process, the documents involved for each construction phase and the level of control and leadership required of the various stakeholders are also addressed. Other topics that will be explored include: project management, delivery methods, contracts, scheduling, construction documents, quality and time management, safety, cost management and commissioning. Class exercises and case studies are used to help students strengthen their applied skills and to increase their value to the development team.

We’ll also address how to determine the time, scope and cost of a project. Finally, students will learn about project phases and lifecycles.

Delivery Methods, Contract Types, and Construction Documents

During this session, we will discuss design-bid build, design build, and negotiated general contracts. Students will learn about different contract types (Lump Sum, Unit Price, CMA, CM@R with GMP, Cost Plus) and when to use them. We’ll also address developing plans, print and drawing, as well as specifications related to projects.

In this session, students will review the case study they were assigned during the previous week. We will discuss the various related to closing out a project, including project closeout, commissioning, document collection and storage, and sustainability.

Confirmation

All registrations processed online receive an automatic confirmation. If you register via fax, mail or phone, the confirmation emails will be sent to you after your payment is received and processed. If you do not receive the confirmation emails within two weeks, please contact bell@naiop.org.

Cancellation Policy

All cancellations must be in writing. Cancellations of registrants received after May 22, 2014 will be charged a fee of $100 per attendee. Cancellations received after June 5, 2014, will forfeit the registration fee. No refunds will be made for no-shows. Substitutions are permitted until June 5, 2014. Non-members substituting for members will pay the difference in fees. Please fax all cancellation/substitution notices to (703) 904-7003.

What does tuition cover?

Payment for a NAIOP online course entitles access for one person only to the course and all materials.

Is there an online instructor?

Yes, there is a live instructor presenting each class. Students are able and encouraged to engage and interact with the instructor and each other.

How much out-of-class work is required for each course?

Courses offered online require no more than one hour per week of additional work outside of the scheduled class times.

What if I miss a scheduled class?

If a student misses a class, all materials and a recording of each class is posted in the material library for the student to review before the next class. A student must attend a minimum of 75 percent of the classes to receive credit.

Do I have to take an exam?

Course exams are not required unless you are enrolled as a candidate for the Certificate of Advanced Study in Commercial Real Estate or the Certificate of Advanced Study in Real Estate Finance.

What records are kept of my coursework?

The Center maintains records of all the coursework you complete, as well as optional exam scores, in a confidential transcript. Transcripts are available to candidates upon request. Please contact education@naiop.org.

What are the computer requirements?

The interactive sessions will be accessed via GoToWebinar.com.
