2017 NAIOP Utah Developer of the Year

Dan Lofgren, founder, president and CEO of Cowboy Partners and its sister company Cowboy Properties, has been professionally involved in real estate development, construction and management since 1975 when he joined the Salt Lake City-based Prowswood organization, where he was president from 1987 to 2001. As president of Prowswood Dan directed development and acquisition/rehab activities in the company’s primary markets of Utah and Southern California, as well as Colorado and Washington. In 2001 Dan founded Cowboy Partners and Cowboy Properties and was joined by most of the former Prowswood organization in a friendly spin-off from Lend Lease Development, the former parent company of Prowswood.

Under Dan's direction Salt Lake City-based Cowboy Partners and Cowboy Properties have been involved in real estate development and/or management in Colorado, Nevada, Idaho, Washington, California and Utah. These projects include office, for-sale residential, mixed-use, luxury rental communities, mixed-income multi-family communities and affordable housing. Cowboy Partners has special emphasis on development and management of housing as a component of urban mixed-use development with particular focus on the inclusion of affordable housing in these communities. Dan is acknowledged as a pioneer in the development of mixed-income communities and mission-driven affordable housing.

Dan has been recognized by the Utah Apartment Association with its Lifetime Achievement Award and he is a former Builder of the Year as recognized by the Homebuilders Assoc. of Utah.

Dan currently lends his support to the community as member of the Mayor’s Blue-Ribbon Housing Commission seeking solutions to the affordable housing gap in Salt Lake City, as a member of the University of Utah National Advisory Council, as the chair of the Pioneer Theater Company Board of Trustees, as a member of the Executive Committee (immediate past chair) of Envision Utah, a nationally recognized leader in regional growth planning, and as a director of The Utah Refugee Connection, and as a director or board member of several other civic and community organizations.

Dan recently completed 8 years of service as a member of the publicly-elected Granite School District Board of Education, and has in the past served as President of the Home Builders Association of Greater Salt Lake and President of the Home Builders Association of Utah. Dan's previous involvement in the real estate industry also includes two terms with the Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle Affordable Housing Advisory Council (serving as its chair in 1993); as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Home Builders and an 8-year term as a member of the Board of Trustees of Utah Housing Corporation (the state housing finance agency), including two years as its vice chairman. Dan also served for 5 years as a commissioner on the Salt Lake County Housing Authority Board of Commissioners where he was chair for two years (2005-2006). Dan is a past chairman of the governor-appointed Utah Quality Growth Commission, where he served for 8 years and he is a former chair of the Board of Trustees of the School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration for Utah (2007-2013) and he has served on multiple local and state committees and boards with particular emphasis on housing affordability.
