Newsweek named John Kasich one of its significant "100 people for the 21st century," citing his nine terms as a congressman in Ohio, his work on balancing the national budget as chairman of the House Budget Committee, and his service as chair of the congressional committee on welfare reform. Encouraged by the Republican Party, Kasich ran for president in 1999, and he currently chairs a nonprofit association, The New Century Project Issues Forum.
