Capitol Hill Day
Wednesday, February 11, 2009
Thanks to NAIOP members who joined us in Washington, D.C., on February 11 to meet with Congressmen and Senators on Capitol Hill. With 190 NAIOP members from 40 chapters making more than 125 visits to Congressional offices, our 2009 Capitol Hill Day is now in the record books as one of our best years yet!
We are still in the process of gathering information on these visits. If you participated in a meeting on Capitol Hill, we ask that you please take a minute to complete our Capitol Hill Day feedback form.

Wednesday is reserved for meetings on Capitol Hill. We encourage every chapter to take advantage of the opportunity to meet with your respective Congressmen and Senators to voice NAIOP's legislative concerns on critical issues. NAIOP will provide materials and education on the issues most pressing to our association and industry during CL&LR - but first you need to schedule your appointments!
Tips to Successfully Schedule Your Meeting on Capitol Hill
- Have a constituent from the representative's home district request an appointment.
- List all constituents who will attend and the main issues you wish to cover.
- If your elected official is unable to participate in the meeting, ask if they would be available for a photo opportunity afterwards.

A checklist to schedule a meeting with your Congressional representatives:
Beginning of January:
- Send a letter requesting an appointment.
- Follow-up with a phone call to the representative's scheduler within one week. If the elected official is not available, ask to meet with the staff that is responsible for covering our priority issues:
- Capital and Credit Markets
- Taxes
- Leasehold Improvements
- Brownfields Remediation Expensing
- Carried Interest
- Energy
- Transportation/Infrastructure
The first week of February:
If you need assistance in scheduling your appointments, contact government affairs and PAC manager Melissa Glenn at glenn@naiop.org or (703) 904-7100.
While on the Hill, prepare and then rest and relax in a room reserved at the Capitol Hill Club. Ask NAIOP's government affairs staff any last-minute questions before heading off to meet your legislator. In between meetings with your representatives, stop by the room to update your colleagues and chat about your visit. The room will be open and monitored by NAIOP staff from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. for attendees. Please note that all luggage should be stored at the Mayflower Hotel.
Don't forget to RSVP for this event on your registration form.
