Wednesday, February 13, 2008

Thanks to NAIOP members who joined us in Washington, D.C., on February 13 to meet with Congressmen and Senators on Capitol Hill. With 119 NAIOP members from 24 chapters making more than 80 visits to Congressional offices, our 2008 Capitol Hill Day is now in the record books as one of our best years yet!

Prior to NAIOP members arriving on Capitol Hill, The Hill, a Congressional newspaper considered the “must read” for federal lawmakers, announced our upcoming visit. NAIOP also released a statement following the visits, which was distributed to several leading Hill publications, including The Washington Post, Roll Call and The Hill, further explaining the issues important to our industry and calling attention to our members’ visits.

Wednesday is reserved for meetings on Capitol Hill. We encourage every chapter to take advantage of the opportunity to meet with your respective Congressmen and Senators to voice NAIOP's legislative concerns on critical issues. NAIOP will provide materials and education on the issues most pressing to our association and industry during CL&LR - but first you need to schedule your appointments!
Tips to Successfully Schedule Your Meeting on Capitol Hill
  • Have a constituent from the representative's home district request an appointment.
  • List all constituents who will attend and the main issues you wish to cover.
  • If your elected official is unable to participate in the meeting, ask if they would be available for a photo opportunity afterwards.

A checklist to schedule a meeting with your Congressional representatives:

Beginning of January:
  • Send a letter requesting an appointment.
  • Follow-up with a phone call to the representative's scheduler within one week. If the elected official is not available, ask to meet with the staff that is responsible for covering our priority issues.

The first week of February:

If you need assistance in scheduling your appointments, contact legislative assistant Melissa Glenn at glenn@naiop.org or (703) 904-7100.

While on the Hill, prepare and then rest and relax in a room reserved in the Capitol. Ask NAIOP's government affairs staff any last-minute questions before heading off to meet your legislator. In between meetings with your representatives, stop by the room to update your colleagues and chat about your visit. The room will be open and monitored by NAIOP staff from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. for attendees to leave their bulky coats, briefcases or laptops. All luggage should be stored at the Mayflower Hotel.

A free buffet lunch will also be available in the afternoon for those wishing to grab a bite to eat and regroup before finishing up meetings through the afternoon. Don't forget to RSVP for this event on your registration form.
