For today's commercial real estate professional, "career" is an action, not a destination.

Through focusing on the energy and momentum of "careering" professionals 35 and under, NAIOP's Developing Leaders (DL) Program is ensuring the future of NAIOP's power and influence. And you can harness that energy by starting a program at your local NAIOP chapter today.

The DL Program is designed to get the 35-and-under set connected with more accomplished real estate professionals. It will give NAIOP a powerful jolt of new ideas and enthusiasm to propel our organization forward.

Many professionals don't yet realize that membership in NAIOP puts new careers on the fast track. They need to understand the advantages of this dynamic community that offers:
  • Access to leaders in the profession with opportunities to tap into their expertise
  • Connections to peers for more effective networking
  • Opportunities for mentoring and team-building
  • And timely industry information that gives them a professional edge.

Here's how to get started:

Make DL Recruitment a Priority In Your Chapter
At your next meeting, discuss the benefits of increasing membership among 35-and-under professionals. Get everyone energized to sell the benefits of NAIOP to a new generation!

Designate a Developing Leaders Committee
The DL program is important, and it makes sense to have people in your chapter dedicated to bringing in new people and ideas. Once you've recruited developing leaders, make sure they have a say in the committee's choices for events and programming — when it comes to reaching out to their colleagues, they know what works. You can also arrange to have a 35-or-under member sit on the board of the local chapter. Even if they don't have voting privileges, it's a great way for your chapter to hear what's on DLs' minds and respond accordingly.

Identify developing professionals in your region
Task your fellow chapter members with compiling a list of potential developing leaders in your area. Network with local organizations to add to the roster. Once you have compiled a list, be sure to send that information to NAIOP Headquarters so they can use it in their recruiting efforts as well.

Create an opportunity to learn about NAIOP
This is the fun part: host a meeting, party, or outside activity or event and send out invitations to all the professionals on your list. Check out the Event Ideas document in this tool kit for some practical suggestions, and be sure to use the flier template as an invitation included in this online toolkit.

Listen to new professionals' concerns
When speaking with potential NAIOP members, listen carefully to what's on their mind-and consider how NAIOP can respond. Professionals thrive on the guidance of their more experienced colleagues, so let them know that you — and NAIOP — are poised to help them get ahead.

Identify potential leaders
As you're meeting and greeting professionals, a few are likely to stand out from the pack. Work hard to get these motivated and highly focused men and women on board, and support them as champions for NAIOP.

Work with colleagues and their companies
Talk to companies in your area about recruiting opportunities for DL as new people come on board. Discuss the possibility of including NAIOP information in employee orientation packets.

Encourage DL members to join our online community
NAIOP has created an online community specifically designed for professionals 35 and under. The microsite, which can be accessed by going to www.naiop.org/dl, will enable DLs to keep their pulse on the latest industry news, chat with peers throughout the nation, read about industry trends, voice their opinions and receive applicable tips and advice. But most important, it gives them a place to go where they can connect with those that understand what they are going through.

Energize your chapter with a DL program now!
