What motivated you to get involved in commercial real estate?
I really enjoy interacting and developing long-standing relationships with people. Knowing that the commercial real estate industry is a "people" business drove me to become a RE Finance major in college. I always knew that I would return (from Dallas) to Southern California where the commercial real estate industry is very prominent and can prove to also be very lucrative.

How has being a member of NAIOP helped your career?
NAIOP has opened many doors and allowed me to meet and work with some of the most influential real estate professionals in the industry. It is a tremendous organization that not only exposes you to your local market, but nationally as well.

What is your ultimate career goal?
I really enjoy the institutional investment sales/capital markets side of the business. Having worked very hard to develop the institutional relationships over the last 10 years, I see myself continuing to develop those relationships and staying on the brokerage side of the business. The ultimate goal would be to lead my own team that covers both office and industrial investment sales throughout the Western United States. Furthermore, I would eventually like to start investing in my own personal real estate deals with my fellow colleagues and friends.

What is your favorite technology gadget?
I'm embarrassed to say this, but I'm not sure what I would do without by Blackberry. Technology is such a huge part of our business today and being connected 24-7 gives us a huge advantage over what the senior professionals had 10 - 20 years ago.

What's on your iPod?
Country, Hip-Hop and Rock

Greg Martz

Full Name: Greg W. Martz
Age: 30
Education: B.S. - Ball State University, Muncie, Ind.
City of Residence: Indianapolis, Ind.

Company: Keystone Corp.

Title: Business Development Director

NAIOP involvement and awards won (Local and Corporate levels):
  • NAIOP Corporate Developing Leaders Award Winner - 2011
  • President Elect / Indiana Chapter - 2011
  • Programs Committee Chair - 2010 - 2011
  • Programs Committee - 2008 - 2009
  • Office Project of the Year Runner-up - 2009
  • Mixed-Use Development of the Year - 2010
What motivated you to get involved in commercial real estate?
Keystone is a much different company than it was three years ago. We made a strategic decision to shift focus to new industries/markets in 2008, rather than continue to focus on what had previously been successful for us. If we had known how bad the recession was going to be, we may not have made such a bold transition. But it really paid off.

Our focus may have changed, but our model remains the same: we invest in projects that stand on their own, and do not rely on volume of transactions. We are extremely selective when choosing new projects. The mistakes we make are passing on good projects, not investing in bad projects.

How has being a member of NAIOP helped your career?
NAIOP Indiana formed almost the exact same month that I transitioned from a career in banking to a career in real estate development/commercial construction. My career has literally grown in step with the Chapter's growth. I'm sure the greatest impact is yet to come, as I'll be assuming the role of Chapter President in 2012.

What is your ultimate career goal?
I think a lot about how our developments are permanent structures that will be around a lot longer than I am. The ultimate goal is to leave the world with good buildings. Not necessarily as a monument to our company, but simply to have a positive impact.

What is the last book you read?
I haven't actually read a book in a long time. But I do listen to audio books quite a bit. "Speak Like Churchill, Stand Like Lincoln" was the most recent. I'm hoping it will help me get over my fear of public speaking.

Do you have any favorite sport/sports team(s)?
The Chicago Cubs, Indianapolis Colts, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. As you can tell, it has been a depressing sports year for me.
